E V Charger installation - What affects the cost?

Installing an electric vehicle charger at home is one of the most convenient ways to charge your car. While many installations are straightforward, the cost can vary depending on a number of factors.

At Sontech Fire & Electrical Compliance, we carry out professional EV charger installations and ensure every system is safe, compliant, and tailored to your property.

⚡ What Determines the Cost of a Home EV Charger?

1. Distance from Your Fuse Board

The closer your charger is to your consumer unit (fuse board), the lower the cost. Longer cable runs require more materials and labour, which can increase the overall price.

2. Condition of Your Electrical System

Your existing electrics play a big role. If your consumer unit is older or has limited capacity, upgrades may be required to safely install your charger.

We may recommend an Electrical Installation Condition Report to ensure your installation meets current safety standards.

3. Type of EV Charger

Most homes install a 7kW charger, which is suitable for overnight charging. Costs can vary depending on:

  • Tethered or untethered units

  • Smart charging features (apps, scheduling, solar compatibility)

  • Brand and design

4. Installation Complexity

Every home is different. Costs can increase if we need to:

  • Run cables around the property

  • Drill through multiple walls

  • Install external trunking or conduit

5. Groundworks

If your parking area is away from the house, additional work may be needed, such as:

  • Trenching through gardens

  • Cutting through driveways

  • Reinstating surfaces

6. Earthing & Safety Requirements

Some properties require additional safety measures, such as:

  • Earth rods

  • Surge protection

  • Load balancing systems

These ensure your charger operates safely and complies with UK regulations.

7. Mounting Location

The simplest installations are wall-mounted near the parking space. If this isn’t possible, a standalone post or additional groundwork may be required.

8. Connectivity (Smart Chargers)

Most modern chargers are “smart” and require a stable WiFi connection. If signal is weak where the charger is installed, additional setup may be needed.
